Timothy N.J. Antoine, Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, presented yesterday a new polymer  50 dollars banknote  (XCD50.8) commemorative of the 50th Anniversary of Grenada’s Independence from Britain.

The note, which will be released to circulation in Grenada in June, shows in the front the portraits of Prime Ministers Eric Gairy and Maurice Bishop, with Olympian 400 meters champion Kirani James in the back.

It was designed by a team headed by Orlando Romain.

It will be legal tender in all the Eastern Caribbean states.

Grenada is the first of the Eastern Caribbean States in attaining Independence. It is planned that similar notes will be issued to honor the Independence of the other six states. Anguila is a British Overseas Territory, which so far has not chosen to declare Independence.
