According to Section 676 (1) (f) of the Bank of Zambia Act 2022 those found guilty of defacing or destroying Zambian banknotes may be sentenced to be sent to prison for up to 10 years.

Similar rules are found in some other countries. As they consider that national currency is an attribute of sovereignty, any attempt to deface, destroy or mistreat local coins and banknotes is seen as an offense against the Nation.
