There are insistent rumors about the imminent release of new banknotes of 500 liras (TRY500.1), and maybe those 1,000 and 2,000 liras. Currently the largest banknote in use is the one of 200 liras worth about USD8.00.

It has been indicated that the new notes will be “full of surprises”, and that design preparations have been completed at the Central Bank. It has also been reported that the current banknotes of 5 and 10 liras will soon be replaced by coins.

Both the Central Bank and the Turkish Mint are denying these allegations.
