As of 1 January 2024 the Central Bank of Sri Lanka has increased the limits for the import and export of currency and monetary instruments.

The new rules are:

Foreign currency

  1. Import: Declaration required if traveler has more than USD15,000 or its equivalent in currency or monetary instruments, or if it intends to leave Sri Lanka with USD10,000 or its equivalent.
  2. Export: Declaration required for amounts above USD10,000 or its equivalent in other currencies or monetary instruments.

Local currency: LKR20,000 in or out.
