For the first time since 2001 banknotes of 5 rubles are being produced again.

These notes (RUB5.2b) dated 1997 are being printed on plastic coated substrate to ensure longer durability . The first letter of the serial number prefix is “ч“.

Even though it is cheaper in the long run to use coins for low denominations, it is possible that current sanctions limit access to the metals required to produce them, thus notes have to be produced.

It is also possible that larger quantities of small denominations are required to service the areas of Ukraine recently captured.
