The Bank of Papua New Guinea announced today that it will issue later this year a polymer commemorative banknote of 50 kina (PGK50.7) on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Independence, which happened on 16 September 1975.                                                          

The note features the Blue Orchid and the Queen Alexandra butterfly, the world largest butterfly. It also shows the national bird, the Raggiana Bird of Paradise.

A total of 20 million notes will be issued. These will be released to circulation on 28 August 2025.
