As reported by several publications coupons of 5,000 won printed in red over white paper have started to circulate in North Korea.

Known as “donpyo” the coupons began appearing in Northern areas, and now made their way to Pyongyang.

The reason for their issue is the scarcity of paper and security inks supplied by China. At the current USD rate of  5,200 won, these coupons are worth slightly less than one dollar.

The Russian and Chinese border closings due to the Covid-19 pandemic has cause serious shortages of all kinds of commodities, among them ink and paper.
