The Laotian government has established as of 20 February fines for the misuse and damaging of banknotes.

It covers deliberate damage such as writing, tearing, scattering, stepping on them, stapling them to ceremonial bouquets, using glue or tape or any other action that damages or demeans them.

Commercial banks are fined if they refuse to exchange damaged banknotes or charge fees for the service.

The selling of new notes for profit is also fined.
