The Central Bank of Iran has announced on Tuesday that the government proposal to change the monetary unit from rial to toman must be approved by Parliament. While the current monetary unit is the rial, in practice most people think in toman (=10 rials). The plan is to redenominate the currency to avoid confusion. Converting the smaller note denominations into coins and issuing larger notes will reduce costs.
