The regimes of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger are considering leaving the Economic Community of West African States, and to abandon the West African franc (XOF).

The three countries have been subjected to sanctions because their armed forces took control of civilian government in coups.

In 16 September 2023 the three countries formed the “Alliance des Etats du Sahel” (Alliance of Sahel States), a mutual defense pact, and there are talks about abandoning the CFA francs and create their own currency.

For the time being the West African franc (XOF) continues to be in circulation.
