The National Bank of Bulgaria announced today that it will issue on 1 November 2019 an improved banknote of 50 leva (BGN50.3).

While the design remains practically unchanged, it has several improvements with respect to the 1999 (BGN50.1) and 2008 (BGN50.2) versions.

   Technical Characteristics

Background colour – brown.

Material – banknote paper tinted in reseda (grayish green), varnished after printing.

Dimensions – 136 mm x 76 mm.

   New Security Features

Additional mark for visually impaired people: four thick and seven thin lines at an angle along the short sides of the banknote.

Hologram stripe with optical effects: when the banknote is swayed, there are alternating images of a bird, Icarus; а coloured hologram portrait of Pencho Slaveykov; a book changing its colour from golden to green when the banknote is swayed; a ‘flame’ dynamic effect with change of colour from golden to green when the banknote is swayed and a 3D image of the number 50.

Optically variable ink: the number 50 is printed in variable ink, with a ‘flame’ dynamic effect, and when the banknote is swayed, the ink changes its colour from golden to green.

Security thread – built into the paper and partially appearing on the reverse with a repeated light-coloured text ‘БНБ 50’ (BNB 50) and a ‘flame’ dynamic effect shifting from golden to green. The image of the repeated text ‘БНБ 50’ is visible on the obverse when the banknote is held up against the light.
