8 July 2026,

When in 2024 Banco Central de la República Argentina ceased to order the printing of local banknotes from S.E. Casa de Moneda, now Casa de Moneda S.A.U., their printing machines were idle.

Now De La Rue from the United Kingdom has subcontracted with the Argentine Mint the printing of 700 Million Nigerian banknotes of 1,000 naira. De La Rue will provide the plates, substrate, inks and all the materials required, while  the actual printing will be made by Casa de Moneda.

Nigerian Security Printing and Minting (NSPM) Plc is the local Nigerian government owned entity that produces all banknotes and coins used in Nigeria. As it cannot cope with the market demand it had to contract abroad the printing of some of its banknotes. Probably De La Rue won the contract, but found it more convenient to order the actual printing with Casa de Moneda.

Casa de Moneda S.A.U. estimates that it will take 18 months to two years to fulfill the order.

Note of the editor: Obviously when the Nigerias’s largest banknote, the one of 1,000 naira is worth only 73 U.S. cents the logical solution would be to make larger notes. But not everything is logical in some places.
