The Bank of Albania has presented yesterday its new family of banknotes. It consists of six denominations: 200 lekë (ALL200.3), 500 lekë (ALL500.4), 1,000 lekë (ALL1,000.3), 2,000 lekë (ALL2,000.2), 5.000 lekë (ALL5,000.2) and 10,000 lekë (ALL10,000.1).

The launching of the new banknotes is planned to take place gradually in this order:

   200 and 5000 lekë banknotes will be put into circulation starting from 30 September 2019;

   10,000 and 1000 lekë banknotes will be put into circulation  starting from 2020;

   2,000 lek banknote will be put into circulation starting from 2021;

   500 lek banknote will be put into circulation starting from 2022.

For the first time, a polymer banknote – 200 lekë – will be introduced.

The designs of new banknotes is based on the same motifs of the current ones, with the 10,000 lekë denomination showing the portrait of poet Aleksandër Stavre Drenova, known under his pen name Asdreni.
