Tendal Biti, former Zimbabwean Finance Minister, has urged the country to adopt the South African rand as the official currency, and join the Common Monetary Area, which also includes Lesotho, Namibia and eSwatini, formerly known as Swaziland.

In 2009 Zimbabwe abandoned its own currency amid hyperinflation that led to the issue of a 100 trillion dollars banknote which ended being worth less than one American dollar. As proposals are advancing to recreate a new Zimbabwean currency, there is fear that a second round of hyperinflation will ensue.
