The government has declared the RTGS dollars the only legal tender in Zimbabwe, as of Monday. Foreign currency in only acceptable to settle airline charges.
“Bond” notes, issued originally at par with the U.S dollar, are now traded at 11 or 12 per dollar in the informal market, and at 6 in the official RTGS interbank market. Since only note of 2 (ZMB2.1)and 5 bond dollars (ZMB5.1) were issued, a lot of pieces are needed for any medium size payment. Most likely the Reserve Bank will have to issue larger denominations.
