As of January 1, 2018 the currency import/export rules have been simplified. The new rules are as follows:

The import of local or foreign currency is free to both residents and non-residents.
Amounts in excess of USD2,000 or equivalent must be declared.

The export by residents is limited to USD5,000 or its equivalent. The export of larger amounts require a special permit.

Non resident are allowed to freely export up to USD5,000 or its equivalent, or more if declared on arrival. Special requests for the export of larger amounts will be considered on a case by case manner.

In all cases the export of amounts of USD2,000 or its equivalent must bee declared
