Bank of Uganda faces the problem that the public prefer to use 1000 shilling banknotes (=USD0.28) instead of coins.
It is more cost effective to issue coins, which cost about the same as banknotes, but have a much longer life.
Bank of Uganda as found that procurement of the coins is difficult, and as the UGX1,000 is the most used denomination, most of the notes of 1000 in circulation are in poor condition.
