An article published yesterday by Liban Ahmad in Somaliland Press details the problems caused in the Puntland region by the unstable monetary situation. Many merchants refuse to accept Somali shilling banknotes, or raise their prices in shillings to deter their use. The only means of payment easily accepted are U.S. dollars either in cash or via the Sahal and Saad mobile money payment services.
To solve this problem Ahmad proposes the creation of a Puntland Monetary Authority.
