The Bank of Sierra Leone announced on 15 September 2022 that the legal tender status of old banknotes denominated in old Leones has been extended until 31 March 2023. 

Originally these notes would have ceased to be current by the end of September, but it must have become evident that the replacement for new notes could not be finished in such a short time.

Old notes will be redeemable at the Central and commercial banks until 31 March 2023. From that date until 15 April 2023 they can only be exchanged at the Bank of Sierra Leone. After the date they will become worthless.
