According to articles published last week by several sources, the National Bank of Poland may issue a new banknote of 1,000 zlotych (PLN1,000.1).
This new high denomination is needed because inflation has reduced the value of the Polish currency, requiring the printing, handling and storage of larger numbers of 500 zlothych notes, currently the largest denomination.
The issuing of the new note is expected in 2025-26.
The new banknote will probably feature the image of St. Jadwiga of Anjou, Queen of Poland. It will be a symbolic gesture, because no woman has appeared on Polish notes since Marie Curie was featured on the 20,000 zlotych note of 1989.
