On 14 January 2026 Pakistan’s Federal Cabinet reviewed and approved the currency redesign project.
The notes to be redesigned are those of 100; 500; 1,000 and 5,000 rupees. The decision to include the 5,000 rupees in the puts an end to the rumors about its discontinuation.
The redesigned notes will include many technical improvements that will make counterfeiting more difficult.
The use of polymer substrate is under active consideration.
The new designs will show Pakistan’s geographical diversity, its historical landmarks and cultural heritage, the role of women, and ecological concerns.
It is estimated that the new banknotes will be in circulation in late 2026.
