Several articles in the Malaysian press discuss the possibility that the new government may print new banknotes to replace the current ones, with the purpose of rooting out corruption.

The government denies it, and it must be remembered that Bank Negara Malaysia took in 1997 out of circulation the notes of 500 and 1,000 ringgit, but did not demonetize them; instead it kept redeeming them.
