Dr. Ernest Addison, Governor of Bank of Ghana, announced today that banknotes of 1 cedi (GHS1 and GHS1.2) and 2 cedis (GHS2.1A and GHS2.1B) will soon be replaced by coins.
The reason given is the high cost of banknote replacement because of heavy usage of smaller denominations. Coins are slightly more expensive to produce, but have a much longer life.
