paper-20-and-50

The last date to use paper notes of 20 pounds of the Adam Smith type (GBP-BoE20.5) and 50 pounds of the Boulton-Watt type (GBP-BoE50.3) is 30 September 2022. After that date these will no longer be legal tender. These have been replaced by new smaller notes printed on polymer

After that date these may be exchanged at the Bank of England. Special requirements may apply to large amounts. Most financial institutions will accept them for deposit from their clients.

Bank of Scotland, Clydesdale Bank and Royal Bank of Scotland will withdraw their paper £20 and £50 banknotes on the same date as the Bank of England – 30 September 2022.

Bank of Ireland, Danske Bank/Northern Bank Limited and Ulster Bank in Northern Ireland will also withdraw their paper £20 notes on the same date.

Guernsey, Isle of Man and Jersey keep using their paper notes. Same is true for the Falkland/Malvinas Islands and Saint Helena.

Gibraltar is retiring its paper notes as new denominations are issued on polymer substrate.
