The Ombudsman of Curaçao has written to the Ministry of Finance to warn that the rules established for the redemption of the older banknotes dated up to 2013 which are being replaced for new ones denominated in Caribbean gulden will lead to unequal treatment of citizens, and possibly to financial disadvantage.
To redeem old banknotes these must be deposited to a bank account. Not all citizens have a one. There is no over the counter exchange at commercial banks. Some banks charge a fee for the service, while others do not.
It has also being noted that some individuals and businesses refuse to accept notes larger than 100 Caribbean guilder, even though they are legal tender.
