The Central Bank of Cuba announced today that new banknotes of 5,000 pesos (CUP5,000.1) will be issued tomorrow 1 April 2026, with those of 2,000 pesos (CUP2,000.1) to follow soon. At the current rate of exchange they are worth approximately USD10 and USD4 respectively.
It also informed that these are part of a new family of notes it is developing. Because of the loss of value of the Cuban peso it is to be expected that some of the lower denominations will no longer be issued.
This new family is devoted to honor female Cuban heroines. The 2,000 pesos is dedicated to the “Madre de la Patria” Mariana Grajales Cuello shown in front and her Monument in Santa Ifigenia Cemetery in back.; The one of 5,000 pesos honors the Heroine of Sierra Maestra Celia Sánchez Manduley in front, with her Memorial in Parque Lenin in the back. Their portraits will be shown in the watermark.
Both notes have advanced security strips and an image of the “butterfly,” its National flower, printed in Optical Variable ink.
Their size remains unchanged at 150 x 70 mm. The note of 5,000 pesos is predominantly blue, and the one of 2,000 pesos will be violet and rose.
