In several cases persons arriving to Brazil carrying multiple current banknotes in mint condition had them seized by Customs. While the import of currency properly declared is free, their interpretation is that numismatists are bringing in these notes to be sold to collectors, which change their condition from currency to merchandise. It seems that Brazil, like some other countries allows travelers to bring in their luggage only articles for personal use and gifts, and not for resale. Therefore anything to be construed as being merchandise is subject to seizure.
