10 March 2026.
The accident with the plane transporting a portion of banknotes of 10; 20 and 50 bolivianos of the B series, and the pillaging of many strewn on the ground is causing serious problems to the Central Bank of Bolivia.
Even as the Central Bank offered in a very timely manner the list of the serial numbers of the stolen notes, and created an application for their verification, merchants and individuals refuse to accept them.
Commercial banks find accepting these for deposit very time consuming, and the Central Bank flatly refuses to exchange them for other notes of the series A or notes of 100 and 200 bolivianos.
The Government is facing demands to swallow the loss and make the stolen notes valid.
The dilemma is whether to declare them valid and take the loss, or to withdraw them from circulation and have to destroy tens of millions of unissued ones, at a cost of millions of dollars.
