The Central Bank of the Republic of Armenia has announced in late April that it will start the process of retiring the banknotes of the Second Generation from 15 May 2025. The notes of the Third Generation have been issued since 2018, and the older ones are rarely being found in circulation.
These older notes will continue to be legal tender until 15 May 2026. Afterward they are redeemable without restrictions at the Central and Commercial banks.
The notes included in the withdrawal are:
500 drams 1999 (AMD500.2)
1,000 drams 1999 (AMD1,000.2.A), 2001 (AMD1,000.2.B), 2011 and 2015 (AMD1,000.3)
5,000 drams 1999 (AMD5,000.2), 2003, 2009 (AMD5,000.3) and 2012 (AMD5,000.4)
10,000 drams 2003 and 2,008 (AMD10,000.1) and 2012 (AMD10,000.2), and
20,000 drams 1999 (AMD20,000.1), 2007-09 (AMD20,000.2), and 2012 (AMD20,000.3).
