José de Lima Massano, governor of the Banco Nacional de Angola, presented to Parliament the new 2020 family of banknotes.

The new notes will have in the front the portrait of António Agostinho Neto, first President of Angola. The portrait of José Eduardo dos Santos will not be on the new notes, which has been seen as a political move by the current president.

The details of the back of the different denominations are:

200 kwanzas (AOA200.3)  Pedras Negras de Pungo a Ndongo (Malange),

500 kwanzas (AOA500.3)  Tundavala gap (Huila),

1,000 kwanzas  (AOA1,000.3)  Planalto Central mountain range (Huambo),

2,000 kwanzas (AOA2,000.3)  Leba mountain range (Huila).

5,000 kwanzas (AOA5,000.2)  Ruins of the Cathedral of São Salvador do Congo, and

10,000 kwanzas (AOA10,000.1)  Zenzo cave (Uige).

The denominations of 200 through 2,000 kwanzas will be printed on polymer substrate, while the higher 5,000 and 10,000 will be on cotton paper.

The printing will be made by companies from Germany, Russia and the United States.

These new banknotes will be released to circulation during 2020, and will co-circulate with the current ones.
