Additional details have surfaced about the planned new banknotes of 500 (RWF500.8) and 1,000 francs (RWF1,000.8).

These will be issued to gradually replace the current notes RWF500.5, RWF500.6, RWF500.7, RWF1,000.5, RWF1,000.6 and RWF1,000.7, of which many are in poor condition because these are the most used denominations. At the same time the security features will be improved, to prevent counterfeiting. 

The previous notes will continue in circulation until such time when the National Bank decides to recall them.
