The Houthi rebels forbad the use of recent banknotes issued by the legitimate government in the last two years. Holders of these banknotes in the areas under their control must exchange them for “electronic balances” under threat of confiscation and incarceration.
This measure has caused serious problems to people that could not buy food or medicine using these banknotes, because vendors are afraid of confisction, or even prison.
The legitimate government asked the United Nations to intervene with the Houthi to reverse this measure.
