Several articles in the Algerian press mention that the recent issue of new banknotes  is part of an operation geared to eventually flush out “black” money. In the “informal” market the U.S. dollar was trading at 175 dinars, versus an official rate of 125.

N.R. It is probable that high denomination old style notes may be recalled, and the redemption of large amounts be linked to presentation of justifying documentation. That has ben done before in Algeria with the banknotes of 500 dinars dated 1970, which were later recalled in that fashion.
