Interesting Counterfeit Banknote Detection and Prevention

In a paper submitted in May to Cornell University Ehsan Toreini, Siamak F. Shahandashti and Feng Hao propose a “Novel paper fingerprinting technique based on analysing the translucent (sic) patterns revealed when a light source shines through the paper.” Since these patterns are random, creating a QR code of a particular area of a banknote, and printing it on the note itself provides a way to verify the note when the marked area is inspected again with the same equipment.
