According to an article published in May by Nation, and reproduced by AllAfrica, there is an alternative currency used by residents and businesses in a slum of Mombasa with a majority of Bangladeshis. It is called Bangla-Pesa and comes in vouchers of 5; 10; 20; 40 and 50. These were printed in Germany. Each member of the network, which now numbers 2,000 members, is given a maximum of 400 Bangla-Pesa. It is used to pay for goods and services, including school fees, funeral expenses and church offerings.

The Government is trying to block its use.
